In a city where butter chicken is considered a sacred rite and spicy food a competitive sport, Delhi has now gone and done the unthinkable—it dumped Bhut Jolokia, the world’s spiciest chili, into a scoop of ice cream. Yes, you read that right. Some brilliant (or possibly masochistic) ice cream parlour near Connaught Place has created what they call “Ghostly Vanilla Inferno,” which sounds more like a horror film than a dessert.
Now, Bhut Jolokia is not your grandma’s mirchi. This chili has flames where seeds should be and is so dangerous it’s used in some military-grade pepper sprays. Someone, presumably after watching too many food challenges online, thought it would be a great idea to weaponise a dairy product.
Naturally, Delhiites have responded with the same calm maturity they exhibit during a sale at Sarojini—by lining up in massive crowds to post Instagram reels of themselves sweating, crying, and occasionally questioning their life choices. Social media is aflame, literally and figuratively, with #SpiceCreamChallenge videos. One influencer declared after three bites that he saw Shahrukh Khan in the freezer aisle.
Is this what the city needed? Possibly not. But is it what the city deserves? Absolutely. In a place that survives odd-even car policies, air quality you can chew, and monsoons that double up as boating practice, spicy ice cream is oddly fitting.
On the bright side, it’s uniting people. Strangers high-five each other after surviving one scoop. Families bond over shared suffering. Even sworn biryani purists have found new respect for vanilla.
Our editorial recommendation? Go for it. Life’s too short to play it safe. Just keep water, yoghurt, and a fire extinguisher handy. Plus, your sinuses will thank you. And if you do survive, you’ll earn the eternal title of “Mirchi Maharaja” in your friends’ group chats.
So here’s to Delhi, where even ice cream has the audacity of spice and the flavour of drama. Long may our tongues burn with pride.
