Butter Chicken at Rs 900?!

Thumbnail Description: Delhi reels as a butter chicken dish sparks inflation-sized outrage

There’s a new storm brewing in Delhi, and for once, it’s not air pollution—it’s butter chicken priced at ₹900 per portion. Yes, you read that right. The beloved North Indian comfort dish has officially been enrolled in the ‘Haute Cuisine’ academy… possibly against its will.

It all began when a fancy new “modern Indian bistro” in South Delhi decided that rich tomato gravy and tender tandoori chicken deserve the spotlight next to caviar and foie gras. Social media, of course, reacted with the composure of a roti denied butter. Twitter exploded, Instagram food bloggers cried into their camera lenses, and WhatsApp aunties threatened collective boycotts. Somewhere, a dhaba uncle quietly wiped a tear of laughter while flipping a ₹280 full plate of the same masterpiece.

Let’s be honest—Delhiites are fiercely sentimental about three things: their traffic shortcuts, their momo vendor, and their butter chicken. Mess with any of these at your peril. There’s an unspoken tradition in the city that your first heartbreak should ideally be followed by a butter chicken meal and butter naan combo—as emotional recovery food, obviously. Pricing it like it comes with a side of Swiss watch is offensive to the spirit of emotional eating.

That said, maybe this ₹900 edition of butter chicken is a philosophical statement. A metaphor, even. For Delhi’s confused identity between being the capital of a developing country and hosting more Gucci stores per square kilometer than most European capitals. Perhaps the restaurant just wanted to start a conversation, and in that, they’ve succeeded. They’re curating butter chicken in the same way the Louvre curates art.

Still, there’s something beautifully democratic about food. In a city divided by flyovers and socio-economic ring roads, butter chicken has long remained a culinary equalizer. So, while hipster bistros may try to garnish it with microgreens and sell it as “deconstructed poultry in creamy reduction,” the heart of Delhi knows it belongs with onions whose sole job is to make your hands stink for a week.

The takeaway? Pay ₹900 if you must—for the Instagram post, the novelty, or the bragging rights. But remember to return to your favorite roadside joint soon after, where the taste is spicier, the cost is humbler, and nobody judges you for dunking naan like it’s a cricket ball in gully.
