Delhi Metro or Hogwarts?

Metro coach or magic portal? Delhi’s strangest ride yet!

Delhi—city of dreams, endless traffic, and now apparently, unintentional live theatre performances inside the Metro. Nothing embodies the spirit of India’s capital quite like a pink line train ride at 6:03 PM—except, perhaps, a man in full wedding sherwani rapping to “Gallan Goodiyan” while two aunties judge him louder than the train’s brakes. Welcome to the Delhi Metro—our nation’s most punctual reality show.

This week a video went viral of an overly enthusiastic young man dancing in the middle of the Metro while holding a speaker, headphones on, and reality firmly off. Inexplicably, fellow commuters just…sat there. Not a single raised eyebrow or hopping security guard. The man went on for two full stations like he was auditioning for India’s Got Talent, Season 29: Underground Edition.

At first, we laughed. Then we cried. Then we realized—the Delhi Metro is no longer just public transport. It’s now the city’s largest performance venue, air-conditioned and with assigned seating. From people making Instagram reels while balancing on poles (like failed figure skaters), to couples conducting dramatic Bollywood breakups at Yamuna Bank station, Delhi Metro is serving full entertainment, every 3 minutes, on both sides of the Yellow Line.

This rise in train-stagram culture has caused distress within the auntie lobby of East Delhi, who have now begun a “Bring Back Silence” petition. One interviewee, Mrs. Kapoor, aged 63, claimed she missed the good old days of quiet glares and cryptic gossips about neighbors’ electricity bill. “Now it’s just tripods and ring lights everywhere, beta,” she sighed, adjusting her dupatta and side-glancing the youth applying foundation while standing.

What’s incredible is how Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), an institution more punctual than our childhood fathers picking us up late, has handled this shift. Quietly. Stoically. Occasionally tweeting stern emojis. Despite the announcements requesting calm and forbidding “indecent behavior,” the Metro has become less of a commute and more like a TikTok battle arena.

And yet, in the strangest way possible, this chaos feels…very us. Delhi is not a city that runs on silence and order. It runs on loudly shared playlists, uninvited life update monologues at 7:15 AM, and toddlers who firmly believe the pole is a jungle gym. Instead of longing for the “peaceful Metro,” perhaps it’s time to accept that this rotating cast of uncoordinated dancers and accidental vloggers might just be Delhi’s newest form of social currency.

The next meme-in-the-making could be happening in Coach 2 right now, and you wouldn’t want to miss it—unless, of course, you’re sitting next to a mystery liquid on the seat, in which case yes, you should exit immediately.

So here’s a gentle suggestion for all Metro-goers: keep a headphone in one ear, your phone charged at 80%, and your patience topped up. You’re not just on a ride to work—you’re part of the show. Clap when appropriate. Ignore when necessary. And for the love of paneer tikka, don’t perform full-fledged music videos unless you’re giving out snacks.

The Delhi Metro isn’t just a train—it’s Delhi itself, rolling between stations, carrying chaos and charisma in equal parts. So sit back, sway slightly as the train jerks, and enjoy the only place in Delhi where everyone comes for the journey…not always the destination.
