Delhi Metro’s Encore

The Delhi Metro, once just a humble transporter of sleepy commuters and tightly packed office lunches, has now upgraded to an unlikely role—India’s most unpredictable talent stage. While trying to get from Rajiv Chowk to Huda City Centre, we now pass through three musical reels, two covert photoshoots, and at least one wedding proposal per compartment. These days, entering the metro feels less like commuting and more like attending a surprise open mic, minus tickets and plus a strong chance you’ll end up as B-roll in someone else’s Instagram reel.

This transformation was not on the blueprint Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) approved back in 2002. But 2024 has smiles on its face and a phone camera in everyone’s hand.

There’s the viral ‘Metro Girl’ dancing to Bollywood hits in the space between doors while 50 other people pretend they are deeply invested in the floor tiles. Or that brave fellow who decided the only way to propose was in the Yellow Line at peak hours with an audience of proud aunties and one very bewildered security guard.

And let’s not forget the occasional philosopher yelling spoken word poetry across the Green Line or the influencer who conducts skincare tutorials while holding onto the pole—literally multitasking while commuting.

Now, before we scoff, let’s understand something: the Delhi Metro is, quite sincerely, the most democratic stage in the country. You don’t need to book time. You don’t face audition judges with slowly raising eyebrows. You show up, you bring your guts or your tripod. Maybe a ring light if you’re really bold. And in return, you gain a captive audience: tired, irritable but chronically curious commuters who may click that “like”.

But there’s a heartwarming truth in all this impromptu performing. The Metro has become a space where people express, connect and sometimes fall in love—all across 214 kilometers of track. So instead of rolling our eyes, maybe we can spare a smile for the dancer in the third coach. Because if Delhi can find a dance floor underground, perhaps we can all find a little magic during our most mundane hours.

And if not, at least remember: always look up, someone might be doing bhangra above your head.
