Ah, monsoon in Delhi — that time of year when the city transforms into an enthusiastic water park, but with fewer safety standards and significantly more honking. The first drops hardly touch the ground before the internet is flooded—no pun intended—with Instagram stories of chai, pakoras and poetic nostalgia, all shot from balconies carefully cropped to avoid the damp underwear drying next to them.
And yet, something magical happens. Roads vanish and become existential ideas. “Where does the footpath end and Yamuna begin?” becomes a philosophical question on par with “Who am I?”. Delhi’s infrastructure predictably collapses faster than your cousin’s crypto investment. But let’s take a moment to appreciate the optimistic soul who still shows up in white sneakers, believing in the power of positive thinking and liquid detergent.
Commuting becomes an Olympic event. Metro stations burst at the seams like they’re offering free Biryani. Prospective Uber passengers begin negotiations like seasoned diplomats, and Google Maps gives up and simply says, “Good luck”. Local politicians, meanwhile, bravely inspect ankle-deep water while four people hold umbrellas over them and one person holds the promise of a future that may or may not include drainage.
The truth is, Delhi in the rain is delightfully absurd. There’s a shared sense of suffering — a communal splashing, slipping, and side-eyeing as autos speed through puddles like they’re reenacting Fast & Furious: Karol Bagh Drift. But there’s also a strange unifier in this chaos. Strangers exchange knowing looks over soaked socks. Couples walk puddle-dodging hand-in-hand, and every tea shop becomes a therapy session.
Yes, the city comes apart like a cheap raincoat from Lajpat Nagar, but in doing so, it lets Delhiites show off their most powerful skill: endurance with humour. Through the downpours and DTC delays, Delhi runs on sheer optimism and enough samosas to float us home.
So here’s our humble suggestion: Embrace the monsoon madness. Wear old shoes, carry an umbrella you don’t mind losing, and say yes to the extra chai. Because in Delhi, the rains don’t slow us down — they just give us new stories, slightly soggier than before.
