Mangoes piled high on a Delhi street cart with eager shoppers
There comes a time each summer in Delhi when people stop talking about weather, politics, or even auto fares—and dive headfirst into mango mania. It’s that delightful, slippery, and a little sticky time of year when every second Delhiite turns into a fruit critic, a pulp philosopher, or a die-hard “Langda over Alphonso” purist. The mango season has hit the capital like an emotional monsoon—and the city is acting accordingly.
Suddenly, everyone has a secret mango uncle. You know, the mysteriously connected soul who “knows someone in Malihabad” and can get you the good stuff, Rs 200 cheaper and three days ripened in advance. WhatsApp groups are no longer about memes or marriage invites — now it’s serious business: “Who wants half a dozen Dussehris? Farmer-direct.” Meanwhile, social media is drowning in mango reels, where influencers slice fruit so perfectly it looks like edible origami.
This year, the heat index and the mango index are rising simultaneously. With over 1,000 varieties in India — each with its own fan club — eating mango isn’t a snack, it’s a seasonal personality trait. North Delhi swears by Chausa, while South Delhi is team Safeda. West Delhi brings out the pulp in generous lassis, while East Delhi is fermenting its own mango pickles in jars only slightly older than Delhi’s potholes.
The health nuts try to ruin it every year: “It’s very heaty, na,” they whisper, munching a carrot. But we, mango loyalists, know in our hearts (and increasingly strained sugar levels) that this golden fruit is not just a food—it’s a feeling. It tastes like childhood, holidays, and glorious Indian summers before climate change decided to barbecue us.
So, to the mango-averse: it’s okay, we’ll see you in November with guavas. To the mango-obsessed: plan your sugar crashes accordingly. And to the determined aunties smuggling Alphonsos from relatives in Ratnagiri—carry on, you’re the real patriots.
Because amid Delhi’s endless honking, construction dust, and metro delays, there’s one thing we can all agree on: when life gives you mangoes, turn them into nostalgia—and maybe a messy milkshake.
