Delhi’s Monsoon Romance

November 28, 2025 Vikram Leave a Comment

Description: Heartbroken potholes and drenched selfies—Delhi’s monsoon is pure filmy drama.

There’s something beautifully chaotic about the way Delhi falls in love with the monsoon every year. It’s like a romantic comedy where the poor roads are the emotionally unavailable lover and the citizens are blissfully optimistic protagonists who believe “this time, it’ll be different.” Spoiler: it’s not.

As soon as the first drop hits the scorching Delhi asphalt, an age-old ritual begins: Instagram is flooded with chai-and-pakora reels, the auto-walas suddenly become philosophers explaining climate change, and your WiFi signal develops stage fright at the exact moment your boss asks to “quickly jump on a call.”

But what this season really excels at—besides mood-setting puddles—is revealing Delhi’s secret swimming pools, more commonly known as roads. Potholes that managed to hide all summer come out of their seasonal depression and make dramatic public appearances. Some have Instagram handles now.

Still, there’s something magical about being stuck in a traffic jam on Outer Ring Road with water up to your bumper while a guy on a cycle passes by, humming 90’s Bollywood rain songs. At this point, Delhi monsoon has given up trying to be purely meteorological—it wants to be a full cinematic universe.

On the civic side, the Delhi Jal Board and MCD have seemingly renamed their WhatsApp groups to “Let’s Just Pray Now.” Every year they assure us that all drains have been cleaned, but somehow every waterway in Delhi ends up with the performance anxiety of a teenager during board exams.

Yet, amid all this damp drama, Delhiites don’t give up. Raincoats become fashion statements. Pet parents turn into reluctant swimmers pulling their reluctant floof-balls through ankle-deep rivers. Couples go on long walks under leaky umbrellas, arguing lovingly about whether it’s okay to eat momos thrice a day.

The biggest irony is in the craving curve—while we curse the puddles, we also romanticize them. Because somewhere between the inconvenience and Instagrammability, the monsoon becomes Delhi’s cuddle season with itself. Yes, flood-prone streets and soggy socks are not ideal, but neither is falling in love, and we keep doing that too.

So this monsoon, let’s embrace the madness. Carry an umbrella, charge your power banks, and keep your sense of humour waterproof. Because however murky the puddle, there’s always a rainbow—or at least chai at the end of it.
