Delhi, the capital of India, where every road is a plot twist and every monsoon has character development, has once again been gifted a surprise straight out of a wildlife documentary. This time, it’s crocodiles. Yes, actual crocodiles, not just aggressive auto-walas. The city’s Kalindi Kunj area, already known for being a lovely place to avoid unless your AC is waterproof, has become a makeshift resort for our scaly friends, thanks to the Yamuna’s flood tantrums.
Apparently, when it rains, it floods, and when it floods, crocodiles decide to go on urban safaris. According to reports and several blurry WhatsApp forwards, at least two crocodiles were spotted sunbathing near Kalindi Kunj. Residents, already dealing with waist-deep water, took one look at the scene and collectively decided that this horror movie writes itself.
Now, to be clear, the authorities did issue safety advisories. But as is the noble Indian tradition, warnings are like discount codes—heard of, rarely used. That didn’t stop a few brave YouTubers from trying to livestream the crocodiles like it was Shark Week: Delhi Edition. Selfie sticks were extended, drones were launched, and one guy was even seen trying to throw Parle-G biscuits, proving once again that we are nothing if not hospitable.
Experts say that the crocs, most likely from a nearby sanctuary, were just confused by the rising water and wandered off. To be fair, with the state of Delhi’s drains, even humans get lost during monsoons. A metro turned water park is now just part of daily life. Next week, we’re expecting hippos outside Huda City Center.
Meanwhile, local authorities have deployed wildlife officials to “track” the crocodiles, which rumor has it includes someone with a stick and strong opinions. Until then, Delhiites are advised to not venture into floodwaters unless they miss the thrill of being a Discovery Channel special.
Our takeaway? Perhaps it’s time we all accept that in Delhi, one day you’re stuck in traffic, next day you’re playing dodge-the-croc. At this rate, someone’s going to start an Airbnb for reptiles. Welcome to the jungle, now with better metro connectivity.
