Parliament Pops Off

India has a shiny new Parliament building, and good governance is now only slightly less important than getting the perfect Instagram angle with its golden spire. Since the Lok Sabha elections heated up, photoshoots outside the new Parliament building have outnumbered political debates inside it. Influencers, political interns, and at least one confused tourist looking for India Gate have all been spotted doing the classic “looking thoughtfully into the democratic horizon” pose.

At this point, Parliament may need its own ring light.

Now, don’t get us wrong—we’re all for civic engagement, especially if it comes with a contour kit. But between selfies and slow-motion reels of MPs walking in like fashion week models, one has to wonder: are we electing legislators or launching freshers into the influencer economy? Watching debates from the gallery is now the second most popular use of Parliament. The first? Shooting a “fit check” video with the caption “Serving looks, serving law.”

Of course, this viral pivot isn’t entirely bad. If it takes a Reels trend to make young people Google the word “Bicameral,” so be it. We’re just saying that if we’re going to turn Parliament into the Disneyland of Constitution Avenue, let’s at least throw in a guided tour, a Punjabi thali, and an animatronic Ambedkar blessing your selfie.

We must also appreciate the irony. While Parliament debates banning apps, the building itself has become more TikTok famous than elected representatives. Somewhere, Sardar Patel is probably sighing in granite.

But maybe this is the connection we needed. Maybe the future of democracy in India lies not just in bills passed, but in b-roll footage. Maybe getting likes on a video captioned “Democracy drip ft. Article 368” is just the civics class our youth actually demanded.

So, next time you visit Central Vista, do strike a pose. Just remember—parliamentary procedure is not a dance challenge. And if you’re going to record a reel, be sure to tag the Constitution. It deserves the clout.
